Engineering Data for Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation initiatives feed on data. To achieve sustainable gains, it is imperative to implement a system of checks and balances that can run as autonomously as possible and maximizes the value of the information contained in the raw data. The process of turning data in to digital assets involves many steps ranging from data collection, validation, reconciliation, conditioning etc. Collectively, these steps are known as data engineering. The goal is to reliably deliver usable data to users, analysts, data scientist, business processes and other applications. Because of the real-time nature of operations in the process and manufacturing industries, this process is repetitive and continuously subject to the variability of the raw input data, performance of the measurement systems and actual plant operations. During the Summit, we will discuss how the mandate of Sigmafine has evolved over the years to become one of the leading data engineering platforms in the process industries.

Supporting Timely Business Decisions in an Agile Refinery with Sigmafine

Iplom is an agile independent refinery located close to Genoa in the North of Italy focusing on efficiency to generate profitability. Iplom produces a wide range of both conventional (mainly diesel and bitumen) and niche products including LL Sulphur Fuel Oil. The refinery is unique as it experiences crude switch approximately every three days.

The Digital journey in Iplom started 20 years ago when it was decided to implement both Sigmafine and the PI System to monitor plant operations and provide timely reconciled refinery yields to track production targets. The existing infrastructure was then expanded by Sigmafine-IMM to manage oil movement operations, requiring the generation of the industrial plant dataset to deliver accurate daily production accounting figures. In recent years, to respond to both environmental authorities and to keep the profitability in a competitive market by reducing costs, Iplom applied Sigmafine and PI to support the Refinery Energy Manager duties and to improve energy efficiency around highly energy intensive equipment.

The natural gas market is in the midst of a rapid growth: since 2010, average global gas consumption has grown by 1.8% per year, making it the fastest growing energy source outside of renewable power. It will explain how vast quantities of data can be analysed in near real-time, KPI’s and operational parameters automatically calculated, data quality checked and patterns and events in data easily recognized and acted upon to ensure that operations continue to run as smoothly as possible.

The advent of all this functionality within the modern real-time data platform has changed the way in which interactions with tools such as Sigmafine takes place and new opportunities have arisen as a result.

Lost with Losses: The Hidden Impact of Measurement Technology in Closing Mass Balances

The importance of accurate and reliable field instrumentation to the production accounting and data reconciliation systems should not be underestimated. The role of field instrument accuracy and its’ impact on data quality KPI’s will be examined. This will be followed by a discussion of the primary measurement devices that are commonly used in mass balance calculations and associated sources of error and uncertainty. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various flow measurement technologies in the context of improving mass and energy balances.

Sigmafine Application in SP Chemicals – Taixing Plant

SP Chemicals is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Chemicals Co. Ltd. and was established in December 1995 in China. SP Chemicals produces more than 2 M tonnes of chlor-alkali and related downstream products, making the Jangsu Province plant one of the largest facilities in China. The site has the PI System as its data infrastructure and is currently working with OSIsoft compatible products like Sigmafine to improve the quality of the material balance of the production plant. Pimsoft's partner in China, Keyman Technologies is using Sigmafine for production accounting & inventory management within the context of a pilot project. The pilot was successful and provided early outcomes by identifying the main reason for the major discrepancies among the data thus providing the foundation for a future expansion to the rest of the facility.

IMM and Transfer Calculation Rules: Better Input Data for a Better Reconciliation

Sigmafine Intelligent Movement Management (IMM) offers an integrated way to plan, execute, manage and report all plant movements. In an industrial plant it is important to accurately know and manage all the plant movements and tank information. This information may be difficult to track in conditions where multiple movement operations occur.

Sigmafine IMM transfer calculation provides the best estimation of the movement’s quantity, by combining the tanks and meter information data. In this presentation will provide an overview of the IMM transfer calculation rules as well as the benefits of correcting the movements data.

Witness the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, the inventor, with working models of his machines such as the Submarine, the Time Machine, the Mechanical Dragonfly, the Rapid-Fire Crossbow, the Mechanical Eagle, and the Continuous Positive Organ based on Manuscript B, the Codex on Flight and the Codex Atlanticus – which contain most of Leonardo’s studies on technological, scientific and engineering-related subjects. Considering Leonardo’s importance as an artist, however, the exhibition provides a digital experience of several of his artistic drawings, including those he made in preparation for his fresco of the Last Supper and his never-completed Equestrian Monument to Francesco Sforza.
